I said goodbye to my best friend next to a dumpster.
It was the final clean out the house day and she was off on her next adventure. We met while working together and it soon became clear how weirdly similar we were. From the beginning I knew her dream (we’re dreamers, after all) was to be a doctor, and after a ton of extracurricular classes, MCAT cramming, and essay writing she was accepted into medical school. A few, actually. She’s that awesome. Her lifelong dream realized.
I was, and am, so dang proud.
I’m not going to lie. It was pretty devastating. Through endless studying on her part and working/house building/photographing on my part, she’s been a near constant reminder that friendship is more than face-to-face conversations, La Hacienda margaritas and shopping trips. Despite the nearly 500 miles between us and the fact that it’s been almost a year since I last saw her face, through a variety of media that only included two phone calls, it’s pretty dang remarkable how well we’ve kept in touch on an almost daily basis.
When she took off for Iowa, I sent a card with this quote on it. For some reason, it has stuck with me reminding me of her solo ambition, talents, determination to be a doctor and overall awesomeness.
Then, I went to St. Maarten with Eric last month (it’s gorgeous there, future photo post in the works) and was snorkeling solo with my Ricoh WG-4, popped up from below and bam. I saw this boat. I thought of this quote, and a photo was born. Doesn’t that look like her, metaphorically speaking?
And now this week, she wrapped up her last exam of her first year, one quarter doctor. Yayyyy!

Sorry for being Elaine.
